Mvuzo Mbebe, the chief executive of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the former SABC bigwig, was yesterday remembered for his invaluable contribution to sport.

He died on Monday night following a long battle with colon cancer, and those who were in Mbebe's circle of friends said he was also a "perfectionist" of note.

His role in guiding the local organising committee to host the Afcon over two years ago was perhaps his swan song, but long before then Mbebe, 52, was a champion in his attempts to put South Africa's sport on the global map.

In his tribute, Safa president Danny Jordaan said: "I met Mvuzo in the 80s as a young student at Rhodes University, and there he joined our sports movement.

"Of course, he had such strong views that he would later become the CEO of the National Student Council. When he moved to the SABC, I think he redefined the organisation, especially in its content and bringing in revenue."

When Mvuzo was appointed chief executive officer of the 2013 Afcon, the outspoken sports administrator was serving as the secretary-general of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa.

"For us, Mvuzo contributed a lot," said SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago.

"He was one of the people that created the content enterprises, which included sport, and was a hard-working man who always wanted to achieve the best."

A memorial service in his honour will be held tomorrow at 1pm at Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church at 3 Kweper Street, Kempton Park.

The funeral will take place at his home at Lourdes Mission in Mzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, from 9am on Tuesday next week.
