Gould's return can't stop Celtic's Macufe triumph

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Doctor Khumalo yesterday refused to blame Morgan Gould for their 1-0 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic in the Macufe Cup at Free State Stadium.

Defender Gould, who was making a return to action following a lengthy injury lay-off, was partly culpable for the only goal of the game which helped Phunya Sele Sele win the annual friendly against Amakhosi for the fourth time in succession.

Gould captained a vastly changed Chiefs line-up, made up of mainly fringe players. Even coach Steve Komphela gave this one a miss, allowing Khumalo to call the shots from the bench.

Khumalo, however, said he was happy with Gould's performance.

"I think we played well. They (Celtic) only had one chance and made use of it. Unfortunately, that is the nature of the game and you can't fault the boys for that," Khumalo said.

Gould will have to shoulder some of the blame for the game's only goal. He failed to keep up with Tshegofatso Mabaso's pace, who latched onto a long pass from his goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali and slotted past Brilliant Khuzwayo. Yesterday's match was perfect preparation for the team ahead of this weekend's return of the Absa Premiership following a two-week break due to international fixtures.

Chiefs take on Mpumalanga Black Aces at FNB Stadium on Saturday, while Celtic visit Golden Arrows on the same day.
