Manyisa will be missed in Bucs' Al Ahly safari

While his Orlando Pirates teammates left Johannesburg yesterday for their key African Confederation Cup tie in Egypt on Sunday, injured Oupa Manyisa has been told he might not play again this year.

The pivotal midfielder broke his leg just over a week ago during the league match at Polokwane City and is now in rehabilitation.

The 27-year-old had an operation on his left fibula - the leg bone between the ankle and the knee - on the day after the match.

"We are optimistic he could be back in action before the end of the year," said Pirates' administrative manager Floyd Mbele at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday as the Bucs squad set out on a long journey via Dubai. "It all depends on how he responds to the rehabilitation, but the period he is expected to be out is 10 weeks. But it may well turn out to be shorter. "It may also be reasonable to expect him to only be back after the Christmas and New Year break," he added.

Manyisa has played a leadership role for Pirates in the African Confederation Cup but now misses out on the crunch semifinal tie against Al Ahly of Egypt.

"He is alright but being the personality that he is, he is obviously frustrated to be out." If there was one positive to the injury, added Mbele, it was a period of enforced rest for the midfielder. "In a way, it is a blessing in disguise as he will now be able to give his body a bit of a rest."
