SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund ducked questions about challenging for the Premiership title like the plague last season.

But yesterday, soon after Matsatsantsa launched their rather bizarre grey away kit, Igesund admitted the stakes were higher in his first full campaign with the Tshwane side. "I am certainly not saying we are going to win the championship, but what I am saying is that we want to be one of the teams challenging for the title.

"I know from experience that it is not an easy task because there are teams like [Kaizer] Chiefs, [Orlando] Pirates, [Mamelodi] Sundowns, [Bidvest] Wits and SuperSport, and any one of these teams can win the championship. Having won four championships before, I always want the next one."

Igesund replaced Cavin Johnson in September and finished in sixth place in the 2014-2015 campaign.

Usually cautious when discussing his targets, Igesund said a satisfactory pre-season and the arrival of Michael Boxall from New Zealand, Grant Kekana, Isaka Cernak from Australia and National First Division Golden Boot winner Phumelele Bhengu would give his side a good fighting chance.

"The biggest challenge I have is to integrate the players, but I am not the only coach with that challenge," he explained. "... and there are two more players that we have earmarked, one of them being Bongani Khumalo if he stays in the country. After that the chequebook will be closed."

Adding weight to their title ambition talks has been club chief executive Stan Matthews, who also revealed yesterday that Matsatsantsa will be announcing a "surprise signing" next week.

He denied that it would either be Itumeleng Khune, Mandla Masango or Tefu Mashamaite, who are clubless after leaving Chiefs.
