United eye payout for Komphela

Steve Komphela's move to Kaizer Chiefs can only be confirmed once Maritzburg United have received compensation for their head coach.

Komphela is set to be unveiled as Stuart Baxter's replacement at the Chiefs Village on Wednesday, but Maritzburg owner Farook Kadodia maintained yesterday that his contract with the Team of Choice would have to be respected.

"The bottom line is Steve has a contract with us, which still has a year to run. But if he wants to leave, as it appears to be the case, we have to negotiate for his release to look at things like financial compensation, which are confidential," Kadodia said.

"If Chiefs have a press conference to announce him, that is their business. What I know is that no one has yet spoken to me about releasing him from his contract."

Komphela's agent Tim Sukazi confirmed Chiefs had contacted him for Komphela's services.

"Chiefs did inquire about Steve, but they made it clear the contract situation with Maritz- burg has to be resolved because they also have two European coaches in the wings.

"We are now trying to resolve matters with Maritzburg," Sukazi said.

He was confident Komphela would be able to convince Maritzburg to let him go, with the former Bafana Bafana captain expected to hand in his resignation today.

"We accept there's a contract in place and he can't just walk away from it. He will have to resign and we will work to effect that resignation. In the next two days, if all parties are serious, this matter can easily be resolved."

A big dilemma for Sukazi is that Komphela has yet to sign with Chiefs, and thus can't resign from Maritzburg just yet.

"This is where we as lawyers come in. We will resolve this," Sukazi said.

Komphela has yet to publicly comment about Amakhosi's approach, but Sukazi said the former Chiefs defender was looking at making a giant leap on the coaching front after spells at Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, Maritz- burg and the SA national under-23s.

"An opportunity to coach Chiefs doesn't come every day, especially for a local [coach].

"That's why we have to make the right call," Sukazi said.
