Orlando Pirates' passage to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup confirms their status as South Africa's best export to African club competitions.

The Buccaneers reached the pool stages of this year's competition with a 4-1 victory over Guinea side AS Kaloum on Saturday that saw them claim the tie 6-1 on aggregate.

It means they are yet to lose a game in the Confederation Cup having now won five and drawn two of their previous seven ties in Africa's secondary club competition.

It does in some way make up for the disappointment of a decade ago when they were forced to abandon a second-leg tie against Sable de Batie from Cameroon.

Leading 4-2 from the first leg of their fourth round clash, travel issues meant they could not honour the return in Cameroon and they were disqualified from the competition. Saturday's match against Kaloum also brought up one significant milestone.

As Sifiso Myeni scored his side's fourth, it took the club to 150 goals in all African club competition.

Those have come from 85 matches in the CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup and now defunct CAF Cup Winners' Cup. They have won just over half of those, 43, to go with 23 draws and 19 defeats.

The club have conceded 76 goals, a little over half the number they have scored, which works out at under a goal a game. While Pirates, continental kings in 1995, have largely embraced playing in Africa, Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs have flown the flag at half-mast, despite their Cup Winners' Cup win in 2001. They have featured in only 39 matches in all competitions, less than half that of Pirates, and were in fact banned for three years for failing to honour a Confederation Cup fixture in 2005.

After Bucs, the next most prolific South African side on the continent is Mamelodi Sundowns, who have appeared in 78 matches. In all, South African teams have competed in 370 matches in African club competition, winning 180 with 90 draws and exactly 100 defeats. They have out-scored their opponents 613- 389.
