Little chance of play-off system changing - Jomo

Clubs in the National First Division are scared to publicly voice their opinion on the promotion play-offs, according to Jomo Cosmos owner Jomo Sono.

It's no secret Sono is against the play-offs, which give top-tier clubs what many consider to be an undeserved second chance of surviving relegation, but Sono said the chances of this system being scrapped were slim.

"You slug it out the whole season. You finish in second place and Leopards finish in third place and then they win the play-offs. Is it fair? It's not. Number one and two should get promoted [automatically] and number 15 and 16 in the PSL should go down. They should not be protecting teams in the PSL. It's not right. The season is finished. The mind and body are tired to be playing in the play-offs.

"But who is talking? It's me, so they might even add more play-offs. Maybe if somebody else can talk, then they can change it. But they are scared to voice their own opinion."

Cosmos escaped defeat in the play-offs on Wednesday against an impressive Black Leopards side at Vaal University of Technology, as the sides played to a goalless draw. Leopards had a number of chances in the first half, but they were denied by the brilliance of Sherwyn Naicker in the Cosmos goal.

Cosmos are top of the three-team mini league on goal difference and play their last match against Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday. Swallows travel to Thohoyandou to play Leopards on Sunday (3pm) and will get relegated if they lose to Lidoda Duvha.

"We looked sluggish in the first half. [But] we are happy with the point because we are top of the log, which is amazing. The break we have now will help us," Sono said.
