Senzo Meyiwa's name was at the top of the list to lead Bafana against Sudan, Shakes Mashaba told members of the media during a press conference held by Orlando Pirates at Rand Stadium on Monday.

How can we doubt, as we were jotting down names as the technical team of Bafana, that his name would come first for Captain.

"Senzo Meyiwa was the link between the team and technical staff. He performed that task very well.

The players would listen to him. I don’t remember any players bringing their problems to us. They always went to Senzo.”

Mashaba also spoke of Meyiwa’s charitable acts, telling the media about a lady who had received money from the player to help with a house she was building.

“This lady that I drove with to the press conference spoke about Senzo. She said he gave her money to help build her home.

"He told her to use the money to put the windows in her house so when she looked out she would see Senzo,” Mashaba quoted.

Mashaba urged players to emulate the fallen goalkeeper’s work ethic.

“To those who are remaining behind, we hope that you have copied everything from Senzo Meyiwa.

“To the one that steps in Senzo's shoes, you have a big task ahead as Senzo set the bar for the team.”

Desolate Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza said Meyiwa's legacy would live on for "eternity".

"His contribution will not be forgotten. It's a sad day indeed for all of us. We are all in mourning for the late Senzo," Khoza said.

"We have lost a great human being and a great leader."

Khoza said the culprits who committed the atrocious crime should be brought to book.

"We need to assist the police to find the people who are behind this murder."

Kaizer Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung could not hold back his tears as he remembered Meyiwa.

"For me this is a national tragedy. As a parent I know what it's like to lose one of your own. His career was blossoming. He was at the prime of his career," Motaung said.

Out of respect for Meyiwa, the Soweto derby scheduled for Saturday was postponed until further notice.
