Modise knew it was the moment

THERE seems to be a trend from Banyana Banyana senior players to take turns to step up to the plate.

While the midfield can take all the plaudits for what was a solid performance in their 5-1 thrashing of Algeria, more will be asked of them in their African Women's Championship semifinal clash against Nigeria on Wednesday.

In the meantime, they are content to let Portia Modise, whose brace saw her notch up 100 international goals in 117 appearances, bask in the glory of her excellent achievement.

While Modise was happy with the landmark, it seemed her teammates, who led her celebration when she scored in the 88th minute, were even happier than the scorer.

Captain Janine van Wyk said Modise's service to the team could not be underestimated and they were more than happy to make her feel special.

Van Wyk said Modise's selflessness for the national team cause was one of the key pillars that drove the team and it was apparent on Saturday as they methodically dissected the north Africans.

"We knew that it was going to happen in this game. We spoke about it ahead of the game and she said ... she is going to score her 100th goal.

"She carries us through the games and we always have hope when Portia Modise is on the field. People do not realise that," Van Wyk said.

"She is very experienced, she knows how to carry the team and she does so without complaining. We are very happy for her."

Just to show how much the achievement meant to her, Modise was draped in a South African flag and could not help but reveal a cheeky smile as she shyly said all that she did was for the team.

"Scoring 100 goals will always be an excellent achievement because you can't do it alone and you are playing against 11 players. Sisonke (We are all in this together)," Modise said.
