Williams relishes Bafana chance

SUPERSPORT United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has joined a list of players ready to remind Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba that they would take up a place on the bench if it meant being part of SA's rebuilding phase.

An untimely injury forced Williams to withdraw from the national team's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan and Nigeria last month, even though he was only called up as a reserve.

When Mashaba named his 26-man squad last week to play against Congo Republic on October 11 and 15, Williams hadn't made the cut.

"I'm keen to learn. Maybe the coach thinks because I have played in the PSL for five years, I don't need to," said Williams yesterday. "I am only 22 years and as far as goalkeeping is concerned, I am still a toddler."

Williams is adamant that his baptism of fire debut in a Bafana jersey against Brazil is "water under the bridge". Bafana were hammered 5-0 at home in March with Williams standing between the sticks.

"The moment that game ended I had to forget about it, otherwise it was going to have a negative impact on my performance," he said. "I spoke to a lot of guys like Rowen Fernandez who helped me get over it, and in my second cap I got a clean sheet."

Williams will be hoping for more clean sheets since Gordon Igesund, the man who was in charge of Bafana on that woeful evening against Brazil at FNB Stadium, is now his coach.
