History made outside ring

READY: Kevin Lerena
READY: Kevin Lerena

HISTORY in local boxing was made on Saturday when a pre-fight medical was conducted at a shopping mall.

This is thanks to veteran promoters Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis as well as Boxing South Africa's manager Archie Nyingwa.

Berman of Golden Gloves Promotions and Ellis, who trades under the banner of African Ring, came up with the idea for the sport that has lost popularity since SABC's blackout just before the Fifa World Cup in 2010.

Nyingwa conducted the pre-fight medical at Southgate Mall near Soweto, and the ceremony temporarily brought business to a standstill.

The event was also an opportunity for the public to meet boxers like Hekkie Budler, Ryno Liebenberg, Johnny Muller, Malcolm Klassen, Ashley Dlamini, Thabang Ramagole, Duran Ray, Shawn Ness, Dee Jay Kriel, Flo Simba, Ntuthuko Memela and female boxer Esther Mashiya.

Kevin Lerena tipped the scale at 92.04kg for his WBC Silver Youth junior heavyweight bout against Gogita Gorgiladze at Emperors Palace next Monday night.

The fight will headline Golden Gloves's box-and-dine tournament. The official weigh-in for this Chesa Nyama-sponsored bill will take place on Sunday.

"I am ready to step inside the ring and do my thing," said Lerena.

Klassen will welcome Justin Savi from Benin over 10 rounds on the night, while Dlamini will take on Sydney Maluleka over eight rounds.

The ceremony on Saturday was also used to bid farewell to Budler and Liebenberg, who will be involved in big fights in Monaco on October 25.

Budler will defend his WBA and IBO strawweight belts against Chinese Xiong Zhao Zhong, while Liebenberg will do the same to his WBC Silver light heavyweight belt against Eleider Alvarez. These bouts will form part of the "Title Tornado" - a four championship tournament - that will be staged by Berman.

l Thabiso Mchunu scored a lop-sided points decision win against Garrett Wilson in the US on Saturday to justify his top rating, especially by the WBC which has placed him second in the cruiserweight division.

The win was Mchunu's first defence of the North American Boxing Foundation belt which he won in New Jersey on January 24.
