Bulls try to keep calm

FRUSTRATION will not help the Blue Bulls' cause as they attempt to find their feet in this year's Currie Cup competition but accountability is key, coach Frans Ludeke said yesterday.

The Pretoria side were humbled 41-13 by the Golden Lions in their season-opening match at Ellis Park last weekend, adding to their woes from last season's campaign where they finished fifth, missing out on a semifinal spot.

The pain of last weekend's defeat also added salt to the wound of an unsuccessful Super Rugby season for the Pretoria side.

Ludeke believes frustration at the results will not help the team as they try to turn their fortunes around.

"Frustration is not going to help," Ludeke said yesterday, ahead of his side's clash against Western Province at Newlands this weekend.

"We just need to be more accurate, make sure we are focused on the right things. Frustrations will only cause you to make more mistakes on the field. For us it's all about chasing the process. We know what's going to get us to reaching that final phase that will get us over the line."

The coach acknowledges that there have been words exchanged in order to improve their performance.

"It's a tough environment where there needs to be accountability and honest feedback. If things do not go right, there are consequences. Players and management are in on that," the coach said lucidly.

"The only thing you can do to a player, to be fair, is if he doesn't play well you let him know about it, and they pick it up."

Ludeke has made a few changes to the starting XV that played the Lions.

Blindside flanker Jacques du Plessis reclaims his jersey after a month out of action with a broken jaw. He replaces Jacques Engelbrecht. Jono Ross moves from the flank to the back of the scrum and Prop Marcel van der Merwe takes Dean Greyling's place.
