Ex-champ Angel to stage a comeback

BOXING South Africa (BSA) is not aware that Isaac "Angel" Hlatshwayo has been relicensed to box.

Trainer Manny Fernandes has announced that the former IBF welterweight champion will make a comeback at Presley's Night Club in Boksburg on August 28. "I am not aware of him being relicensed," said BSA Gauteng manager Archie Nyingwa. "I am not even aware that he is fighting."

Fernandes confirmed that his charge, who retired last year after a string of losses, will make a comeback against Stone van Aswegen.

"I have already done my blood test and I will submit the results to Boxing SA. Once the boxing bug catches with you, it is not easy to get it out of the blood stream. I spoke with my trainer [Fernandes] regarding making a comeback, " said Hlatshwayo, who hails from Shisasi village in Limpopo .

Hlatshwayo had previously held the SA and IBO lightweight belts and IBO strap in the welterweight division.

But he became a shadow of former self, losing to Bethuel Ushona in Namibia before being punished severely over eight rounds by Kaizer Mabuza in what was Hlatshwayo's last ring appearance on March 2 last year.

Hlatshwayo called it quits last year, saying he was heeding the advise of BSA board member Peter Ngatane, who was concerned about the boxer's life after realising that he was unable to take a punch, and also that his balance was gone.

Ngatane, however, said told Sowetan he was not aware Hlatshwayo was fighting again.

"Regarding his licence, he will have to follow all the required medical processes, including brain scan."
