Letsoaka top man for inaugural tournament

BAFANA Bafana assistant coach Serame Letsoaka has been asked to lead the SA under-19 side that will compete in the Durban U19 International Tournament.

Letsoaka remains an assistant to outgoing Bafana coach Gordon Igesund, but the SA Football Association employers asked him to temporarily take over the team in Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba's absence. Mashaba is in West Africa with the U20s, playing a series of friendly matches in preparation for next month's 2015 African Youth Championships qualifier against Cameroon.

Safa's communications director Dominic Chimhavi confirmed Letsoaka's appointment yesterday, saying: "He has already started with preparations, we are looking forward to a great tournament."

The eight-club event, jointly organised by Safa, the KwaZulu- Natal government and eThekwini municipality, will be played from July 31 to August 9.

Brazilian giants Santos will be the first team to arrive in South Africa for this inaugural tournament tomorrow. Argentina's Boca Juniors are the other South American side in the tournament.

Santos have been drawn in Group A with the SA U19 team, Feyenoord (Holland) and Everton (England).

Boca Juniors are in Group B with Italian side Roma, Benfica from Portugal and KwaZulu-Natal Academy X1.

Development coach Farouk Khan is excited that some of the big clubs in the world are coming to South Africa for this tournament, which will also help expose local youngsters to international soccer.

"It is competitions like this that will help South Africa to accelerate its progress in the sphere," Khan said.

The tournament's group games will be played at two venues - Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu and Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, respectively.

The semifinal games will take place at King Zwelithini in Umlazi, with the final scheduled for Moses Mabhida Stadium.
