THE quest for a place in the Uefa Europa League group stages continues tonight for a number of South African stars.

Bafana Bafana midfielder May Mahlangu heads the list of hopefuls as he travels to Hungary with Goteborg to play Gyor.

The Swedes have been in indifferent form this year, but Mahlangu has been a key weapon with goals and assists in recent matches.

They will face a tough challenge on Gyor, who won the Hungarian league last year and finished second last season.

They have yet to reach the group stages of the Europa League though.

Goteborg have twice won the Uefa Cup, the forerunner to the Europa League, in 1982 and 1987.

Joel Untersee and his Lichtenstein side FC Vaduz are hoping to emulate their best European performance by reaching the third round of the Europa League, something they managed in 2009-10 and 2011-12. They are up against Polish side Ruch Chorzow.

Right-back Untersee recently extended his loan at Vaduz for another season from Italian giants Juventus.

Johannesburg-born goalkeeper Dani Amos, who has recently been linked with a move to England, should start for Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv at Kazakhstan outfit Astana.

Other South Africans set to join the competition at a later stage include Lebogang Phiri of Brondby, PEC Zwolle's Kamohelo Mokotjo, Ayanda Patosi who plays for Lokeren, Bongani Khumalo of Tottenham Hotspur, FC Twente's Nhlakanipho Ntuli and Steven Pienaar of Everton.
