Four PSL sides in Charity Showdown

PSL sides Bidvest Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic, Mpumalanga Black Aces and AmaZulu will feature in a four-team pre-season tournament on July 19 at the Bidvest Stadium.

The event, dubbed the Charity Showdown, will be played in a semifinal format, with the winners advancing to meet later in the day.

It follows the same format as the now defunct, but ever popular, Charity Cup, which the PSL discarded in 2011 in favour of the Carling Black Label Cup that features only Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The Charity Showdown will be an important step in the pre-season for the four sides, coming as it does two weeks before Celtic and Wits meet in an MTN8 quarterfinal in early August.

Black Aces, who yesterday announced the signing of Thanduyise Khuboni from Golden Arrows, are also in that competition and will use the games to prepare for their top-eight quarterfinal with Kaizer Chiefs.

The semifinal lineup will be announced at a later stage, but the first game will get under way at 9.30am with the final to be played at 4pm.

The tournament will be broadcast on e.tv's OpenView HD satellite channel, giving the broadcaster a long-sought test with the local football market.
