Majoro saves Pirates

Orlando Pirates striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has hit form at the right time with Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba in need of prolific marksman to include in his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

Majoro, fresh from an inspiring performance in the 4-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the weekend, was the saviour again for Bucs last night, netting a second-half goal to cancel out Siyabonga Nomvethe's first-half strike as Moroka Swallows and Pirates played out to a 1-1 draw.

Not for umpteenth this season, the Dube Birds squandered a lead and interim coach Fani Madida has a lot to think about ahead of the club's next match. But he may not be in the position for much longer.

German coach Ernst Middendorp arrived here last night and was warmly greeted by Swallows boss Leon Prins before the former Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs coach was shown to the VIP section by the Dube Birds chairman.

Middendorp is jobless after parting ways with Celtic earlier this week, but he could be back on the bench in no time with Swallows desperate to get someone who can get them out of trouble.

Swallows came into this game as underdogs, lying in 14th place on the standings with 17 goals scored and 25 conceded. They were desperate for the points, but few had given them a chance of upsetting a Pirates team that had walloped Ajax Cape Town and had secured a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns the game before that.

However it was Swallows that would go into the break with the surprise lead. Ten minutes before the break, 37-year-old Nomvethe netted his fourth goal of the season for the Dube Birds in the league. He stretched to tap home a long-range shot from Lucky Baloyi.

Pirates were nothing like the side which tore apart Ajax at the weekend, with shots from Sifiso Myeni and Kermit Erasmus going wide of goal in the first stanza.

However, the visitors dominated possession in the second period and they got the goal they were looking for 13 minutes from time when Majoro calmly finished from Kermit's pass from the edge of the box to register his sixth goal in the league and secure a point for Bucs.

l Clinton Larsen marked his return to Celtic in style when he guided his side to a 2-0 win over Mpumalanga Black Aces at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Frank Mhango scored the two goals.

- Platinum Stars and Chippa United played to a goalless draw at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
