ANTHONY Laffor's brace made sure Mamelodi Sundowns moved to second place with a 2-1 win at Maritzburg United last night.
Laffor scored in the 49th and 61st minutes, while Sundowns reject Kurt Lentjies, drew one back for the home side in the 85th minute.
United's iffy home form continues as they wait for their first home win since the 3-1 trouncing of Platinum Stars on October 18.
The cool Pietermaritzburg evening aided the high tempo of the fixture as both sides ran tirelessly at each other.
One of the more odd but interesting one was that of Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Khumbulani Banda, who were defending the respective right and left flanks. They took advantage of each other pushing up too far but their respective attackers did not take advantage.
Downs had their first chance as early as the fifth minute but Khama Billiat could not bang in Teko Modise's delectable pass.
United's first chance came two minutes later but he did not do enough to test goalie Kennedy Mweene. United were the better side in the second half but the visitors managed to sustain the pressure. This time the hosts were on the receiving end of a roasting counter attack where Modise and Cuthbert Malajila combined well to put the Liberian international through. Predictably, the hosts threw men forward and countless attempts were thwarted by a resolute Sundowns defence along with a superb Mweene saves.
Their resistance was finally broken by a strike from Lentjies. Mondli Cele had a golden chance to get the deserved point but missed a 90th minute sitter after Mweene parried a long-range shot into his path. It killed whatever fight that was left in the hosts.
l Franklin Cale scored on the stroke of full time to earn Ajax Cape Town a point as they drew 1-all against tail-enders AmaZulu at the Cape Town Stadium.
Ayanda Dlamini scored for Usuthu is the 85th minute.
