Clever boys blow chance

YESTERDAY'S goalless draw between Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits might have just given weight to suggestions that there's perhaps no match for log leaders Kaizer Chiefs in this Absa Premiership title race.

Neither Stars nor Wits were in a giving mood as they played out to a stalemate that could hurt the Students in the long run.

Wits had more riding on this - victory would have reduced the points gap between them and Chiefs to 11 and guarantee that they remained in second place for at least another week.

Everyone, not least their coach Gavin Hunt, thought they would ride that wave.

Amakhosi continue to grind out positive results and avoid defeat.

However, fellow title contenders Wits hardly lit up yesterday afternoon though they had more in their tank than Dikwena.

The Clever Boys had the luxury of influential players Sibusiso Vilakazi, Jabulani Shongwe, Vincent Pule and the central pairing of Thulani Hlatshwayo and Buhle Mkhwanazi to keep it water-tight at the back. Dikwena were without talisman Robert Ng'ambi, who was injured. Yet it was the side fighting to move away from the relegation zone that looked like scoring in the second half.

The first 45 minutes would have cured insomnia, with only two tame attempts on target.

And when Dikwena finally got clear-cut chances for a smash-and-grab, they lacked firepower up front.

Bloemfontein Celtic and Moroka Swallows also played to a goalless draw at the Free State Stadium in another PSL match yesterday afternoon.

Nocawa Skiti's brace was at the heart of Cape Town Roses' 2-1 win against Palace Super Falcons, which earned them their first Sasol League National Championships title yesterday, writes Khanyiso Tshwaku from Isaac Wolfsons Stadium in Port Elizabeth. Substitute Gugu Gabuza scored for Palace in the 86th minute.
