Chokoe relieved as Baroka end drought

BAROKA FC coach Sello Chokoe expressed relief after the Limpopo club registered their first victory since August in the National First Division.

Baroka hammered African Warriors 5-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, thanks to two-goal heroes Gift Motupa and Victor Letswalo. Donald Mokondelela also found the back of the net for Baroka, who play Golden Arrows tomorrow at Chatsworth Stadium.

Baroka had gone six matches without a victory in the league, but bounced back in fine style against the lacklustre Warriors side.

Tenth-placed Baroka are now seven points behind league leaders Milano United, who returned to the top of the standings with a 2-1 win over bottom side Maluti FET College at Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday.

"We have been waiting for this moment, to get a victory. We have played a lot of draws, but we needed to get a win," Chokoe told Sowetan yesterday.

"The good thing is that we are not far from the team that is on top.

"The confidence in the team is very high now. The boys are hungry and they are looking forward to our next game against Golden Arrows. Arrows is the most organised team in the league. They have not conceded a goal this season, but they are also not scoring much. It's going to be an interesting game."

Elsewhere, Thanda Royal Zulu beat Highlands Park 2-0. Phumelele Bhengu scored his sixth goal of the season for Thanda before Siduduzo Dlamini's goal sealed the three points. Vasco da Gama played to a goalless draw with Cape rivals FC Cape Town at Parow Park.

Arrows were held to a goalless draw by Witbank Spurs at Chatsworth Stadium. Santos and Cape Town All Stars also failed to score at Athlone Stadium.

GaRankuwa United were held to a 1-1 draw by Jomo Cosmos at Pilditch Stadium, while Royal Eagles snatched a 1-0 victory over Black Leopards at King Zwelithini Stadium.
