SOME 21000 people have entered the Nike Soweto Marathon, organisers said yesterday ahead of the race on November 2.

"The People's Race is back, bigger and better than before," Central Gauteng Athletics president James Moloi said in a statement.

The race was not held last year after they failed to secure a sponsorship amid infighting within the athletics fraternity.

"The city has committed to deploying 260 Johannesburg Metro Police to assist with traffic and road safety, they will be complimented by 300 experienced marshals from local running clubs that will oversee activity on all three routes [10km, 21km and 42km]," added Moloi.

"The entire team is committed to making sure that all runners are safe and that they have a memorable experience."

Soweto Marathon Trust chief executive Banele Sindani said 21 water points would be dotted along the three routes, equating to refreshment stations almost every 3km.

Gates to the expo centre, where the race starts and finishes, will open at 4am on the day of this popular race, which attracts big-name athletes from across the continent.
