WP not celebrating home semi yet

WESTERN Province may have secured a home semifinal and kept their record of only one defeat in the Currie Cup, but they are keeping their champagne on ice.

The Cape side registered their eighth win in nine games on Saturday when they defeated the Free State Cheetahs 34-29.

"Although we've managed to secure a home semi, nothing is achieved yet. We want to keep continuity and make sure the players who have been there this whole year, the whole squad, are match- sharp," said WP coach Allister Coetzee.

Most of the focus on the day was fullback Dillyn Leyds, playing in his first match for WP after returning from a year in Australia with Western Force. Much was expected from the 22-year-old, who had to fill the void left by the injured Cheslin Kolbe, but his first game back in the Cape side failed to live up to expectation.

Cheetahs were left ruing missing their chances in the game, but most importantly the realistic possibility of losing out on a semi spot.

"Unfortunately in our last three games, we get to the last couple of minutes of the game when we've got a grip on the game, and then the game goes to the wire and we lose out," Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan admitted.

l Substitute centre Fred Zeilinga was the 21-point match-winner as Sharks edged Lions 26-23 at Kings Park in Durban.

Lions' ball-in-hand approach is a pleasure to watch, but they struggle away from Johannesburg, having also lost at WP and Bulls.

l Often suspect travellers, Bulls made it three away victories in a row when they waltzed to a 37-6 bonus-point victory over Pumas. - Additional reporting by AFP
