'Zondo no threat to me'

ROYAL Eagles' coach Duncan Lechesa is not bothered by the arrival of Khabo Zondo as the side's technical director.

In fact, the stocky trainer is looking forward to working with an experienced coach like Zondo.

"No no no, I'm not worried about my job here, instead I am excited to be working with Khabo," Lechesa said yesterday.

"We planned for the game against Thanda [Royal Zulu] together and we got a point. We are doing the same with our next match against Cape Town All Stars. It is just a matter of time before this team gel."

Eagles host Boebie Solomons' All Stars at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday night.

Zondo, the former Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows and Tembisa Classic coach, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Eagles general manager Richard Makhoba said no one will lose his job in the team. "Khabo has been employed as a technical director and Duncan remains our head coach," he said.

Zondo replaced Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane, who recently parted company with the wealthy yet struggling NFD side. Eagles are third from bottom on the log after one win and one draw against three defeats.

Lechesa will be hoping for maximum points against All Stars following a 1-all draw against Thanda at the weekend. While Eagles have not had a good start to the season, their KZN rivals Golden Arrows continued with their winning ways at the weekend.

Shaun Bartlett's side stayed in touch with the leaders on the log, thanks to a 1-0 success over an obdurate Santos side at Chatsworth Stadium after an own goal by Vukani Ngcamu.

Elsewhere, goals by Joseph Mhlongo and Loyiso Simandla shot FC Cape Town to the summit on the table as they beat GaRankuwa United 2-0 at home. They have 12 points from six matches, while Milano United FC are second after a 0-0 draw against Witbank Spurs.

It was also a good weekend for Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos, who secured their first victories of the season. Leopards saw off provincial rivals Baroka FC 2-0 after a brace by Sanele Mkhize in Thohoyandou, while Nkanyiso Madonsela struck twice and Bryce Aka once to ensure Cosmos win 3-1 over African Warriors.

Maluti FET College are still rooted at the bottom of the table after playing to a 0-all draw against upstarts All Stars at Athlone Stadium.

Third-placed Vasco da Gama beat Highlands Park 1-0 in Tembisa, thanks to Aleni Lebyane strike.
