THE quality in the Mamelodi Sundowns side is finally being matched by positive results. Yesterday afternoon, the Brazilians ran riot in a 3-0 thumping of hapless Polokwane City.

While the Absa Premiership champions caught form much later than expected, the marathon that is the league race means they are right up there with early pacesetters.

Downs won their encounter with three beautifully taken goals by striker Cuthbert Malajila and midfielders Themba Zwane and Teko Modise, who deserved it the most having kick-started the rampage with dazzling footwork in the first half.

Sundowns shifted gears after being on the back foot in the opening 30 minutes as City searched for the early goal that would have unsettled their visitors. It took a moment of brilliance from Modise - gliding past three defenders before passing to Elias Pelembe, who was unselfish in setting up Malajila to finish acrobatically past keeper Dino Visser.

The second goal only arrived closer to the hour mark when Malajila turned provider for Zwane and guaranteed three points against a Polokwane side with one victory this season. Modise added a third when he was sent clean through on goal.

The match was good value for money after glitches in the Computicket system almost led to kickoff being delayed. If Sundowns fans were worried about their team not giving it everything to defend their title, this win - a third in a row - allays their fears.

City took to the pitch without coach Kosta Papic on the bench because of work permit issues.

His trusted assistant Joel Masutha, who worked with him at Chippa United just a few months ago before they both quit, was in charge.

l At Royal Bafokeng Sports Place, Platinum Stars and the University of Pretoria played to a goalless draw to remain closer to the relegation zone.
