Igesund sets target - United aim for top 8 by halfway

GORDON Igesund says his aim is to have SuperSport United in the top eight by the halfway mark of the league season.

He believes a championship challenge is not out of the questions for Matsatsantsa this campaign.

Igesund started training with his new side on Sunday after replacing Cavin Johnson at the helm of the Tshwane side and is building towards his first game at home to Platinum Stars on Saturday.

He said he has inherited a "decent" squad but added that they would have to make some changes to the way they played if they were to start winning games.

"We have got a bit of stuff to work on and it has been about going through all the videos of previous games and identifying the issues," Igesund told Sowetan. "But the spirit in the team is great, the players know we need to get going quickly and everybody is looking forward to that first game.

"I have only had three training sessions so far, but I can work with what I have got, it is a decent squad. There are enough good players, most important is to work on our tactical awareness defensively because that has not been good enough, and also to get our confidence back."

The former Bafana Bafana coach added that the team could only assess where they were headed this season in another 10 games, which would mark the halfway point of the campaign.

"I said to the players, let's see where we are after another 10 games. First priority is to get away from the position we are in, then we reassess after 15 matches of the season.

"If we can be four or five points behind the leaders at that stage, then it will really make things exciting for the second half. You never know what can happen then," he said.

The coach admitted he was enjoying the day-to-day interaction with his players after leaving the national team job at the end of last month, where he had limited time to work with the squad.

Ronwen Williams and Dove Wome, who joined from cross-town rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, are some of the quality players Igesund will work with at Matsatsantsa.
