THABO "Super Eagle" Sonjica will make his debut at the imposing Emperors Palace when he defends his IBO junior featherweight belt against Roli Gasca of the Philippines.
Sonjica, from Duncan Village, has fought most of his bouts in East London.
This opportunity to fight at Emperors Palace, which is every boxer's dream venue, is an example of the fraternal spirit in the sport. His promoter, Mzimasi Mnguni, has suffered two strokes and is very ill.
Mnguni's boxing business is handled by his brother Sihle, who staged Sonjica's first defence at Orient Theatre on June 8 when Sonjica demolished Toto Helebe in one round.
Mnguni, confined to his wheelchair, made a special effort to watch his only world champion in action.
Golden Gloves fight publicist Brian Mitchell, who was commentating for SuperSport, told promoter Rodney Berman how explosive Sonjica was.
Berman, who has a successful working relationship with Mnguni, immediately announced that he would take Sonjica under his wing since his friend was ill.
Mitchell later announced that Sonjica would defend against Gasca in the "Silver Salvo" tournament on August 9.
"We come a long [way] with Mzi," said Berman.
"It is proper and humane for me to look after Mzi's fighter ..."
