Bucs recruit Sarr confident of starting Berth

SENEGALESE midfielder Issa Sarr is up for the challenge of contributing to Orlando Pirates' pursuit of Premiership trophies in the new season.

Sarr and former AmaZulu goalie Philani Zikalala are the only two high-profile players signed by Pirates during the off season. Speaking yesterday at Pirates' open-media day at Rand Stadium, Sarr said he was delighted to join an outfit with massive history on the continent.

"It's a great honour for me to be at Pirates, they are one of the biggest clubs in Africa with a well-documented history. I'm enjoying myself with my new teammates," said the former Platinum Stars midfielder. "It is still pretty early, but I can tell you that I know I have to work hard to be a regular. I want to be part of a successful Pirates team that will win trophies."

At the same event, coach Vladimir Vermezovic promised Pirates' supporters that they will be happy people again in the new season with the team winning trophies.

Pirates won only the Nedbank Cup last season, which has earned them a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Serb said he was not too concerned about Saturday's Carling Black Label Cup against Kaizer Chiefs because he has faith in his team.

"I'm satisfied with the team that we have assembled, it's more balanced. People are going to see a different team on Saturday, I have no doubt we will do well.

"Our pre-season camp in Nelspruit went very well. I'm confident we will achieve big things because I had enough time to prepare the team."

Pirates will have their end-of-season awards in Johannesburg tonight.

Chiefs, meanwhile, will this morning parade their new players and also announce their position with regard to their African Champions League participation. Some of the new players include Siphelele Mthembu and Zimbabwean Ovidy Karuru.
