Fortune plumbs for Queiroz to return

CARLOS Queiroz, who confirmed he would quit Iran at the end of the World Cup, has received Quinton Fortune's backing to return to the South Africa job he quit 12 years ago.

The 61-year-old said a lack of government financial support was the reason he would not return to the Middle East when his contract expires at the end of the tournament.

Bafana failed to qualify for the tournament and the last man to send them through qualification, Queiroz, is said to be interested in a return to the post Gordon Igesund vacates next month.

"I hope if Carlos is interested in taking the job, Safa appoint him because he would be of huge benefit to our national team," Fortune said.

"He is brilliant tactically and pays great attention to detail.

"I was sad when he left the national team because I thought he had done a great job. He was probably the best manager we had during the time I was playing for the national team.

"I thought we would keep him for quite a long time because he would not only focus on the national team but also on the under-23s and developing young players."

Fortune played under Queiroz in the two years the Portuguese mentor was in charge of South Africa - between 2000 and 2002 - before Queiroz fell out with Safa.

Retired Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson snapped him up to be his assistant and by the time the Scotsman retired after 26 years at Old Trafford, he hailed Queiroz as the best assistant he worked with.
