CASTER Semenya could be in danger of missing the Commonwealth Games later this year.

Eleven SA athletes - nine men and two women - had achieved qualification by the May 31 deadline set by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc). But 800m star Semenya and other potential medal contenders like discus thrower Victor Hogan and hammer-thrower Chris Harmse were not among them.

Hogan finished fifth at his maiden world championships in Moscow last year, and veteran Harmse is the defending Games champion. SA's hopefuls across all sporting codes had to be ranked in the top five in the Commonwealth to guarantee selection for the 2014 showpiece in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3.

Sascoc is also allowing a second-tier qualification for "talented junior and youth athletes making the transition to senior events", but that is unlikely to benefit Semenya, who won the 2009 world championships and Olympic silver in London in 2012.

Many of the top Commonwealth nations set deadlines of May 31 or June 1 because the Games organisers require all national teams to be submitted by June 11.

Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy said the SA team would probably be officially named after that.

SA''s track and field Commonwealth qualifiers (based on the IAAF''s and other available world lists):

Men: Simon Magakwe (100m), Akani Simbine (100m), Wayde van Niekerk (200m, 400m), Andre Olivier (800m), Johan Cronje (1500m), LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles), Willem Coertzen (decathlon), Zarck Visser (long jump), Khotso Mokoena (triple jump).

Women: Wenda Nel (400m hurdles), Sunette Viljoen (javelin).
