WBC Silver cruiserweight champion Ilunga "Junior" Makabu (pictured) has bolted the Golden Gloves Promotions stable, its publicist Brian Mitchell confirmed yesterday.
Mitchell also manages the promising career of this talented left-hander from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Makabu, the former WBF and IBF Youth undefeated champion, is trained in SA by Harold Volbrecht.
"I don't even know where he is as we speak. He said he was taking a holiday to Congo," said Mitchell, who claimed the break-up was caused by a fight that Makabu signed for without their consent.
"He signed for a fight which will take place in Congo. We told him he cannot do that because there is a big fight coming up in Monte Carlo on June 21, where he will fight for the top spot in the WBC ratings," he said of the boxer who is currently rated No 3, a spot below NABF cruiserweight holder Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu.
"He then turned around and said he had never accepted a fight with us for Monte Carlo.
"Clearly, the opportunity to fight for the top spot falls by wayside," said Mitchell.
Makabu refused to shed light on the developments.
"I am still in Congo, fixing my things. I will talk to you as soon as I fly back to South Africa," he said.
Meanwhile, Mitchell announced that Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen will fill Makabu's position on the Monte Carlo bill, where the former undefeated IBO super middleweight champion will face France-based Congolese Doudou Ngumbu over 10 rounds in the light-heavyweight division.
Oosthuizen vacated his title last month and moved up to the light-heavyweight class where the WBA has already given him the No 4 rating. He has fought in that weight class, outpointing Jared Lovett for the IBO Youth title in July 2009.
But the lefty came down to super middleweight, where he won the IBO strap and defended it seven times.
Makabu made his professional debut in South Africa under Nick Durandt in 2008.
They parted ways in 2012 because the boxer complained that he was not getting enough fights from promoter Branco Milenkovic.
He then teamed up with Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves, who organised the IBF Youth and WBC Silver championship fights for the boxer.
