Barker aiming for fourth

VETERAN coach Clive Barker reckons he can take his unfashionable Mpumalanga Black Aces team to as high as the surprise fourth place he achieved in the Absa Premiership with Bidvest Wits last season.

The former Bafana Bafana boss steered his new side into the top eight for the first time this season as they forced a 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates at the Mbombela Stadium. It continued a run of form that has seen them lose just once in their last seven league games.

"I think that's what we are aiming [for], doesn't matter what people might say. My wife has told me a million times, 'don't go and say you're going to win the league', but I think fourth is a real possibility," said Barker.

"We are delighted to be in the top eight. I thought it was a terrific football match [against Pirates]. Both sides kept the ball nicely, tried to manoeuvre it around.

"I thought we nearly caught them on the counterattack a few times, although I'd rather have done through our build-up. But still I'm buoyed."

He also welcomed the chance to rest weary legs after four games in 12 days for the club as Aces are already eliminated from the Nedbank Cup.
