Low-flying Birds face blunt Arrows

IF MOROKA Swallows can't beat bottom-of-the-log Golden Arrows at home tonight, then they do not deserve re-entry into the coveted Absa Premiership top eight.

The Birds are without main striker Edward Manqele, who is suspended, but they will not come up against a side more woeful in the Absa Premiership than Abafana Bes'thende.

Arrows have lost nine of their last 10 games, perforated by the 3-2 win over Polokwane City at King Zwelithini Stadium the day they told former coach Mark Harrison to pack his bags. Swallows aren't at the peak of their powers either, and have not won since beating Polokwane City in December last year.

They are also fresh from a 5-2 whipping at the hands of Mpumalanga Black Aces that makes the movie 12 Years A Slave seem like a romantic comedy.

Coach Zeca Marques said they had turned the corner following the 1-0 loss to Orlando Pirates last week but the Dube Birds went to KaNyamazane Stadium to find Aces in brimming form.

Nonetheless, Luvhengo Mungomeni back from injury to shore up the leaky defence, so too is Tsholofelo Mokgothu.

Talisman Siyabonga Nomvethe, who has scored six times this season, has just penned a new 12-month contract with the club and will need to add to his goal tally to justify the contract extension.

"Bhele" scored in the 5-2 loss to Aces but without Manqele, who has carried the team with eight scalps in the league, the ex-Bafana man will have to take charge.

Lerato Chabangu will also be looked upon for goals when they come up against the worst defence in the league. For Arrows, Joseph Musonda is suspended, meaning things will remain sticky at the back for the Umlazi-based outfit.

"We need to bounce back but it will be difficult to turn things around," said interim coach Shaun Bartlett.
