Trainer slams official over WBC fight

RESPECTED referee and judge Thabo Spampool has come under fire from Namibian trainer and promoter Nestor Tobias.

Tobias lambasted the official for the manner in which he handled a WBC Silver International light heavyweight bout between Willbeforce Shihepo and Johnny Muller.

Spampool, a former boxer, is one of the few local officials who are registered with the WBC. He was one of the three judges in the WBC, IBF and IBO heavyweight championship between Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman in Brakpan in 2001.

Tobias guides the career of Shihepo, who lost to Muller at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni at the beginning of the month.

But Tobias did not attend the fight because he had a tournament back home in Namibia. Tobias said he followed the action on SuperSport's broadcast.

While Spampool was the referee, WBC's representative in South Africa Peter Ngatane was fight supervisor of a bout that degenerated into a wrestling match.

Joe Chaane (SA), Eddie Pappoe (Ghana) and Daniel van de Wiele (Belgium) were the judges.

Chaane and Pappoe scored the fight 116-113 in favour of Muller, while Wiele scored it 114-113 for Shihepo.

Spampool, who cautioned the two combatants on many occasions, eventually docked Shihepo a point for holding and hitting in the sixth round.
