BOXING pundits who have always referred to Hekkie Budler as a paper champion must give the country's WBA and IBO minimum weight world champion the credit and respect he deserves.

This heartfelt request was made yesterday by Budler's trainer Colin Nathan.

Budler's ability has been recognised outside these shores by Ring Magazine - the American boxing magazine - that has shown great respect for Budler's ability as a fighter by giving him the No1 spot.

Budler overwhelmed Karluis Diaz of Columbia with a high work-rate and power, forcing their bout to end in the first round instead of the scheduled 12 at Emperors Palace onSaturday night.

Budler, who was later awarded an IBO championship ring for making five successful defences, improved to eight knock outs in 25 wins against a loss. Nathan said: "Those who have always said Hekkie cannot punch and referred to him as a paper champion must shut their mouth, sit back and take notice. He proved that he was a legitimate world champion."

Nathan's other charge, Ryno "Lion" Liebenberg, also roared to a first-round win over Joey Vegas for the vacant WBC International light-heavyweight title. Meanwhile, Johnny Muller beat Willberforce Shihepo to capture the vacant WBC International Silver light-heavyweight belt.

Other results of the African Explosion bill are: Ricardo Hiraman beat Phumudzo Monyai, KO in three rounds; Sibusio Twani beat Thabang Ramagole on points over four rounds; and Adam de Moor beat Jeff Otiembo on points over six rounds.
