Late transfers to look out for

A RELATIVELY quiet January transfer window will slam shut today when the Premier Soccer League offices close at 5pm, leaving clubs with just hours to make final additions to their squads ... and it seems there are three more big deals possible.

One of those is the switch of striker Lehlohonolo Majoro from Kaizer Chiefs to Orlando Pirates in this window, with insiders suggesting the deal would be completed by close of business today.

The clubs met earlier this week to thrash out a deal that would see the player end his Naturena nightmare ahead of the end of his contract in June, and join Pirates immediately rather than wait until next season. Majoro would be the first player to be transferred between the two Soweto giants since Jimmy Tau in 2005.

Amakhosi are still hopeful of landing Katlego Mphela before the end of the month, but Sundowns have been exploring other options for the want-out striker, who has signed a pre-contract at Naturena for next season.

Chiefs are desperately short of attacking options with only three fit senior strikers in Bernard Parker, Kingston Nkhatha and Knowledge Musona to see them through the hectic second half of the season, which includes potentially arduous journeys through Africa in the CAF Champions League.

Sowetan understands that Mamelodi Sundowns have relaunched their bid to sign Bloemfontein Celtic and Bafana defender Thabo Nthethe.

The 29-year-old is a long-time target of the Chloorkop club, who have engaged reluctant Celtic again about taking their skipper in January.

Bidvest Wits are also trying to push through a deal to get midfielder Jabulani Shongwe from Sundowns now after the player signed a pre-contract with them for next season.

Confirmed transfers in at Wits are striker Sthembiso Ngcobo, who has spent the past six months on loan at AmaZulu but came via parent club Kaizer Chiefs, and midfielder Letladi Madubanya, who is reunited with coach Gavin Hunt after the pair had a successful time together at SuperSport United.

George Maluleka left SuperSport United to join Kaizer Chiefs after he rebuffed the attentions of Sundowns for a second time. The Brazilians had wanted to sign the 25-year-old when he left Ajax Cape Town for United in 2012, but the Tembisa-born midfielder turned them down then as well.

Maluleka's exit from Matsatsantsa was facilitated by the arrival of Lebogang Manyama from Ajax Cape Town, though SuperSport did miss out on Majoro as well.

Instead they brought in striker Dino Ndlovu from Maccabi Haifa in Israel on a six-month loan.
