Notsi faces first real test

THREAT: Chippa United striker George Akpabio
THREAT: Chippa United striker George Akpabio

FORMER Lesotho senior national team coach Leslie Notsi is hoping to get his new job as coach of United FC off to a flying start with a win to add to Roses United's woes.

The two meet in what is expected to be a one-sided National First Division clash at Moruleng Stadium tomorrow at 3.30pm.

Notsi was appointed coach of the North West-based side on Monday after the dismissal of former Orlando Pirates skipper Dan "Dance" Malete last week.

The Lesotho national is encouraged by the fact that his charges walloped Orlando Pirates 4-1 in a warm-up game in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

"We [the technical staff] are delighted that there is appetite for goals in the team, I hope the appetite will continue in our league games," Notsi said.

"It is my first job in South Africa and I have always wanted to work in this country, which will form part of my growth as a coach.

"I want to start the new job with a win," said the former Arsenal and Matlama player, who is assisted by compatriot Lehlohonolo Thothanyane.

Roses are embroiled in an ownership dispute that could see the club returning to Mangaung following allegations that the pervious owners were not paid.

The club changed ownership late in September after former Jomo Cosmos publicist Sinky Mnisi announced he had bought it and would relocate the side to Tembisa.

The previous owners refused to comment when approached by Sowetan, while Mnisi could not be reached.

Elsewhere, log leaders Chippa United are away to FC Cape Town at NNK Rugby Stadium in a Mother City derby tomorrow. Chippa have excellent players like Letsie Koapeng, Sipho Mtule and George Akpabio who scored in last weekend's 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

FC Cape Town ensured Chippa moved to the top of the log after playing to a 2-2 draw with Milano United in their last outing. Milano, now second, visit Jomo Cosmos at Makhulong Stadium.

Ezenkosi are fresh from a 1-0 win over African Warriors in a midweek game at the same venue, with Mzwandile Ndzimandze the scorer.

In another game also scheduled for tomorrow, Blackburn Rovers meet Vasco Da Gama at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Cleremont in Durban.

In Sunday's action Witbank Spurs face Sivutsa Stars in a Mpumalanga derby at Puma Rugby Stadium, while Warriors host Black Leopards at Charles Mopeli Stadium.

All the matches will start at 3.30pm.
