Safa tells coaches to toe the line

THE SA Football Association's new technical committee will insist on reports from the respective national team coaches, including one from Bafana mentor Gordon Igesund, in attempts to "change the image" of the association.

THE SA Football Association's new technical committee will insist on reports from the respective national team coaches, including one from Bafana mentor Gordon Igesund, in attempts to "change the image" of the association.

Natasha Tsichlas, the chairwoman of the committee, said yesterday that the recently-established body would not be another toothless structure in Safa.

She urged Igesund, along with his under-17, U-20 and U-23 counterparts to submit reports to account for their successes and failures so far.

Igesund, who was handed the Bafana job in July last year, was tasked with reaching the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations held in South Africa earlier this year as well as guiding his side to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The coach failed in both mandates.

His contract expires at the end of the World Cup.

"We are not here to criticise, but here to add value," said Tsichlas. "The association appointed these coaches and we should not turn around and blame them. This committee has been brought in to try and help change the image of Safa. We can't work against these coaches, unless something drastic happens."

The junior national team coaches have also come under fire for their disastrous qualification campaigns for major tournaments such as last year's London Olympics.

Solly Luvhengo, the Amajita coach, and under-23 mentor Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba will also be at the mercy of the technical committee, while under-17 trainer Simon Ngomane was given the boot following his team's failure to qualify for the youth World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, which starts tomorrow.

Tsichlas took office for the first time on Monday after Safa president Danny Jordaan appointed her as chair of the technical committee alongside former Bafana captain Lucas Radebe and Farouk Khan. Tsichlas is also a member of Safa's national executive committee, which was trimmed following the elective congress last month.

"We've got our work cut out for us. And I will insist on everything being done the right way because I am a perfectionist. I know everything will not be fixed overnight. So in that sense I am a realist and not a dreamer," she said.

"Safa has also been without a technical adviser and this is one of the positions we are looking to fill soon. What is more pressing is trying to improve our under-20 team because they are playing in the Cosafa Cup in December."

The tournament will take place in Lesotho from December 3 to 14.
