TOP runner Mapaseka Makhanya has opened a seven point lead in the Spar Women's 10km Challenge Grand Prix after finishing third in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.
Makhanya is leading with 37 points despite having finished second in the first leg of the series in Cape Town last month.
Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahora, who is the winner of both the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth legs of the series, does not qualify for the Grand Prix's first prize, a new car, which is reserved for South Africans only.
In terms of the rules, runners earn Grand Prix points according to their positions in the five legs of the series.
The top 20 in each race earn points - 20 for first place, down to one for the 20th runner to cross the finish line.
"It's great to be at the summit of the Grand Prix but we still have to run three more legs, in Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg," said Makhanya.
"My dream is to win the car at the end of the series in October.
"I've been invited by the Senegal government to an international meet on June 2. They are paying for my flight and accommodation, I will start focusing on the Durban leg once I've done well in Dakar."
The Dakar meet will be the second international track and field event for Makhanya who won the 800m race in Mauritius two weeks ago.
