Khenyeza could face ban

BAD boy Mabhuti Khenyeza could be banned for 12 months for spitting at a linesman in the Premier Soccer League last month, dealing a massive blow to Ajax Cape Town's hopes of staying up in the Premier Soccer League.

Khenyeza faces a hearing in Johannesburg tomorrow at which charges of "misbehaviour and unsporting behaviour" will be put to him.

Khenyeza is alleged to have spat and verbally insulted linesman Zakhele Siwela after he was sent off late in the game against Mamelodi Sundowns early last month.

Khenyeza has already served a two-match suspension for the red card - but spitting at match official is a much more serious charge, with a recommended sentence of a one-year ban.

Khenyeza was due to appear before the PSL's disciplinary committee last Thursday, but Ajax Cape Town got a postponement so that they could get legal defence for the player.

The club have grasped the severity of the situation and that they face losing a prized asset at a crucial juncture of the season.

Khenyeza, who previously played at the club, was signed by Ajax Cape Town in a January swap deal that saw Bradley Grobler go to SuperSport United during the recent transfer window.

Khenyeza scored the third goal for Ajax in their May Day win over his old club Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town last week, which relieved some of their relegation concern but left them still needing points from their last two league matches to avoid dropping out of the top flight.

The 30-year-old striker has had a volatile career that also includes walking out on Bafana Bafana and fighting with former coach Muhsin Ertugral, who, ironically, is back at Ajax.

He also shares the record for the most red cards in a single season - set at Mamelodi Sundowns in 2009-2010 when he was sent off three times in the campaign, resulting in him being suspended for a total of nine matches.

The fact that it has taken some six weeks for the case to come before the PSL's disciplinary committee reflects the chaos in the league's legal department caused by an absence of any work over the last year.

Only since the appointment of a new prosecutor has the process of dealing with a massive backlog of cases begun with almost daily hearings to try and catch up.
