ENGLISH Premiership side Sunderland are to honour Nelson Mandela by dedicating Easter Saturday's league game against log leaders Manchester United at the Stadium of Light to him.

The club in the northeast of England decided to dedicate its own "Nelson Mandela Day" to Madiba after it formed a partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to promote the legacy of the world-famous leader through the global reach of the Premier League.

Sunderland are on board as legacy advocates of the foundation.

For the game against the Red Devils, the Black Cats will sport one-off T-shirts for the pre-game warm-up that will bear the foundation's logo and a special text to donate messages in support of the foundation.

Top Burundian musical group, Abatimbo Drummers, will entertain the fans prior to the start of the game and at half time. Sunderland also plan to organise fundraising events for the foundation.

Sunderland marketing director Mike Farman said it was a great honour for the club to be involved in a projected started by Mandela.

"By becoming a legacy advocate of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, we hope to accomplish even more for a common good."

The Black Cats' putative shirt sponsor is Invest in Africa, a non- profit organisation encouraging companies to look at the continent as a business opportunity.

But the Daily Mail discovered that the deal was paid for by Tullow Oil, and Invest in Africa was run by the fuel company that has many ties to Africa.
