'Lightest ever' kit for World Cup 2014

At next year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil, players will be sporting what Adidas claims is the "lightest ever" kit.

To match the Adidas f50 lightweight football boot (or soccer cleat), teams from Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and Spain will be donning Adizero technology, with kits weighing in at 40 percent less than last year's and guaranteed to stay dry throughout the match.

In the latest version, Adidas was able to shave off ounces in the main jersey, collars, and sleeve cuffs, as well as trim away threads from the national federation crests and even the Adidas three stripes. The shorts are now made with a new woven lightweight fabric for "increased breathability and a lighter waistband," Adidas says.

Design for the kits was based on interviews with "the next generation" of each nation, Adidas says, with the company asking young people to express what makes them feel proud about their country. Adidas says the inspiration for the Russian kits was the feats of the nation's cosmonauts in the 1960s, while Argentina's kit was inspired by the country's flag, created by General Manuel Belgrano, one of the main liberators of Argentina. Germany's kit is inspired by the nation's "understated brilliance" and work ethic, while Japan takes its inspiration from "the power of the team."

Kits for some countries are available globally now at selected Adidas retail outlets and www.adidas.com/worldcup. While prices vary, men's jerseys are priced at 80 euros, and women's (when available) are 70 euros.
