Gqokoma gets his title shot

PROMOTER Mzimasi Mnguni is relieved that his charge, Unathi Gqokoma, will finally get to fight for the South African junior- bantamweight title after two consecutive postponements.

Mnguni said Gqokoma would oppose Siphosethu Mvula for the vacant national title at the Orient Theatre on November 3.

The title was forfeited by Miniyakhe Sityatha for failing to renew his licence in June.

Mnguni said the two postponements were caused by Zolani Tete, the No 1 contender from Mdantsane who pulled out twice due to medical reasons.

"Unathi felt like his world was crumbling when Tete pulled out. I mean, everything, including official weigh-ins, had already been done for their showdown to take place," said Mnguni yesterday.

"Unathi is relieved that he will finally get the chance to reclaim his title, which he lost to Sityatha."

Sityatha's reign ended in the boardroom in June.

Mnguni said No 3 contender Evans Mbamba turned down the opportunity to fight Gqokoma because he said he had bigger offers elsewhere.

Boxing South African then sanctioned the fourth-rated Mvula to oppose Gqokoma, the No 2 contender, whose eagerly- awaited fight will be staged by jointly by Mnguni's Eyethu Boxing Promotion and the Eastern Cape government.

Mnguni said Bongani Mfundisi will defend the Eastern Cape provincial mini flyweight title against Malibongwe Mntusanto in the main supporting bout.

There will be four more undercard bouts.
