All eyes on record for PSL goals

FANS will be hoping that the opening weekend of Absa Premiership actions brings with it goals galore and beats a record mark set in the 2012-2013 campaign.

Last season, 25 goals were scored in the eight matches on the opening weekend, an average of 3.13 per game. It was a tally boosted by eventual champions Kaizer Chiefs' 6-0 victory over AmaZulu.

That average beat the previous best mark of three goals per game scored in the 1999-2000 and 2002-2003 seasons. A record 27 goals were netted on the opening weekend of the 1999-2000 campaign, but that was spread across nine games as the PSL was an 18-team league then.

This year there will be seven games on the opening weekend, not eight, with Orlando Pirates' Champions League participation resulting in their fixture against AmaZulu being moved to Thursday.
