Wits gunning for Benjani

FORMER Manchester City and Portsmouth striker Benjani Mwaruwari is in demand in the Premier Soccer League as his contract with Chippa United comes to an end this month.

Big spenders BidVest Wits have approached the former Zimbabwean national team financier to join them in the new season.

Chairman Chippa Mpengesi said: "I know Wits want Benjani, there are many other clubs interested in signing him. The whole thing is worrying me because we want him to focus on the National First Division promotional play-offs so that we can go back to the PSL."

Mwaruwari joined United on a three-month contract.

Wits CEO Jose Ferreira could not be reached for comment and co-director George Mogotsi would neither confirm nor deny their interest in Mwaruwari. Newly promoted Premiership side Polokwane City are also chasing the striker's signature.

Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau could be joining Platinum Stars, while AmaZulu have expressed confidence in striker Ayanda Dlamini by offering him a new three-year contract.

"AmaZulu have an option for one season on the contract of Ayanda but they have opted to offer him a new deal for three years," said Dlamini's agent Jazzman Mahlakgane.

Usuthu are also retaining attacking midfielder Sthembiso Dlamini.

Mahlakgane is hoping to find a new home for Tau, who was released by Chiefs after coach Stuart Baxter said he does not fit into his plans for the new season.

"There are discussions with two clubs, we will have a follow-up meeting next week. I can't mention them until we have reached a deal."

Tau could be a perfect replacement for Stars captain Vuyo Mere, who is on the radar of Wits. A deal will be finalised this week, once Ferreira is back from holiday.

Following the departure of Moeneeb Josephs, whose contract has expired, Orlando Pirates are chasing Ghanaian international goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, whose club Ashanti Gold is reportedly demanding R5-million.

Dauda was part of the Black Stars squad that was in South Africa during the Africa Cup of Nations finals early this year. According to Ghanaian media, Pirates are also talking to Dauda's teammate striker Yakubu Mohammed, who could take over the baton from Benni McCarthy, who has retired .

Polokwane City have enquired about the availability of former Bafana Bafana and Jomo Cosmos striker Siyabonga Nontshinga, who is back with Bloemfontein Celtic after a loan deal with Mpumalanga Black Aces expired. Sowetan has learnt that Celtic chairman Jimmy Augousti has promised to release Nontshinga on condition Phunya SeleSele get a replacement.

The Limpopo outfit owned by Johny Mogaladi has reached an agreement with Sundowns for four youngsters, Walter Maponyane, Themba Zwane, Abel Mabaso and Samuel Julies. They have also approached Pirates for assistance, but Mogaladi will meet Bucs bosses next week with a list of players they want on loan or to buy outright.

Despite University of Pretoria football manager Kenneth Neluvhalani insisting this week that rock-solid defender Vincent Kobola was staying put at AmaTuks, AmaZulu and City have made enquiries about the former Moroka Swallows player.

At SuperSport United, Coltrane Munyai will be named new team manager after George Mosoetsa asked to return to the academy.
