KAIZER Chiefs are looking to Mozambique for another centre-back in a bid to try fix the troublesome position in their squad.

The club's football manager, Bobby Motaung, was in Maputo on Sunday to watch Chico, a centre-back from the high-flying Liga Muculmana playing in only his second international for the Mambas.

Motaung flew to the Mozambican capital for the World Cup qualifier against Egypt, which the Mambas lost 1-0 and in which Chico showed a feisty spirit coupled with inexperience, particularly in terms of his positioning.

It is not clear what conclusion the Chiefs boss reached from his visit to the Machava Stadium, where Mozambique were clearly outclassed by the silky smooth Egyptians.

Chico, whose full name is Francisco Mioche, is a possible option to strengthen a department that has been a headache for the club over the past few years and if they do buy him he will be the fourth centre-back purchased by the newly crowned champions in three years. Chiefs bought Tefu Mashamaite from Wits two seasons ago but saw him struggle in his first year at Amakhosi before flourishing in the most recent campaign.

This time last year they splashed out a record fee for Morgan Gould and Mulomowandau Mathoho.

But Gould suffered two serious injuries during the season and is a future concern, while Mathoho is still seen as an unpolished product despite being first choice for Bafana Bafana in their three recent internationals this month.
