HISTORY, fame and fortune is what the local shootout between Hekkie Budler and Nkosinathi Joyi is all about.

This boxing match will be the most lucrative strawweight fight in the annals of South African boxing history.

Promoter Rodney Berman, whose Golden Gloves Promotion will organise the fight at Emperors Palace on June 15, revealed the purse money yesterday.

He said Budler, who will put his IBO belt on the line against the highly rated Joyi, the current WBA International champion, will get R500000, while the challenger will walk away with R300000.

"This has never happened before that boxers in this weight division in South Africa earn such big purse money," said Berman.

He revealed that he had gone a step further in making sure that Budler and Joyi get the worldwide recognition they deserve.

"Our negotiations with Ring Magazine to award the winner with the belt, which is vacant, are at an advanced stage."

The authoritative US magazine is referred to as the Bible of boxing.

It rates Joyi at No3, while Budler occupies seventh spot.

Meanwhile, fight publicist Brian Mitchell announced that they had sold the internet rights for the fight to the rest of the world.

"People will be able to get it through their cellphones," Mitchell said.

Budler, from the West Rand, is the former IBO junior-flyweight champion. He was dethroned by Gideon Buthelezi.

The 23-year-old, whose skills are polished by Colin Nathan, has only six short-route wins in 22 victories.

Joyi, 30, the former national, IBO and IBF champion who is trained in Mdantsane by Lennox Mpulampula, is yet to lose against a South African foe.

Joyi was stopped in seven rounds by Mario Rodriguez in Mexico for the IBF belt last year.

He boasts 16 short-route wins from 23 victories.
