Birds eager to clean nest

ZECA Marques is looking at rebuilding his Moroka Swallows team for next season to be one of the Absa Premiership's top sides in two seasons.

The Dube Birds coach yesterday hinted that there could be wholesale changes to his side next season, admitting that the side needed to start building as soon as possible in order to lay a foundation to compete for the league title in the coming seasons.

"We need to start rebuilding now. We really need to look at the future and get some fresh, young legs," Marques said.

The Birds have no less than 10 players in their squad over the age of 30, with Siyabonga Nomvethe and MacBeth Sibaya the oldest at 35.

The side has lost two of its star players from the past two seasons, Bennett Chenene and David Mathebula, to SuperSport United. One of their rising stars, Sibusiso Kumalo, will be on his way to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The club has already released Zimbabwean Oscar Machapa and Malian Cheik Cisse, who have been the first casualties since the season came to a close last week.

Marques said he had forwarded his wish list of players he'd like to sign to club chairman Leon Prins whom he met yesterday morning to plan for the upcoming season.

"I have forwarded my suggestions and players I'm interested in to the chairman, but things could always change on a day-to-day basis, so I cannot give names yet. We will see with each passing day how things go," he said.

More players are expected to make their exit from the Dobsonville-based side over the next few weeks.

The future of players like Sibaya, former Orlando Pirates star Joseph Makhanya and midfielder Bongane Twala is said to be uncertain at Swallows.

Marques indicated that although he will be looking at bringing some young blood into his squad, not all his senior players are at a risk of losing their spots in the side.

"When I say young I don't mean we will just look for players under the age of 22. We also need the more experienced who are 25 or 26. We need the experience - a mix of youth and experience. It is that sort of mix that brings the results.

"In two to three years, then we can be one of the sides to beat. We need to find that balance to be competitive," the coach said.
