Swallows soar as Arrows fall

MOROKA Swallows staked their claim for a top-eight finish in the league campaign with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows at Dobsonville Stadium last night.

Swallows took charge from the start, with two goals in the first period from Bennett Chenene and another brace courtesy of Katlego Mashego in the second half. Nomvethe went close with a header of his own in the 38th minute, but the ball drifted just wide after the cross came in from Luvhengo Mungomeni. Chenene then made his way through the last line of the Arrows defence four minutes before the break, and while a defender got a touch on the ball in the area, the Swallows player kept his cool and picked his spot to double the lead.

The scores remained unchanged until deep into the second half, when Mashego made a run from the halfway line. Without any Arrows defenders in sight, he was left one-on-one with Ricardo Goss in the Arrows goal. Despite the keeper getting a touch to it, the ball crossed the line as the Birds drew three goals clear. Musa Bilankulu scored a consolation strike for the visitors in the 89th minute with a powerful shot inside the area. But, Mashego had the last say when he scored his second in stoppage time.

lA first-half brace from Bongani Ndulula helped AmaZulu climb clear of the relegation zone and sent Black Leopards crashing to the bottom of the log with a 4-0 victory at Princess Magogo Stadium.

Leopards had to play with 10 men after Djunga Munganga was shown a straight red card after 32 minutes, although they had already fallen two goals behind by that stage. Goodman Dlamini and Thokozani Mshengu scored the other goals.

  • Bloemfontein Celtic beat Supersport United 2-1 at the Free State Stadium and BidVest Wits pipped University of Pretoria with the same score at the Tuks Stadium.
