Sharks shy away from Smit reports

The Sharks will not comment on media reports suggesting former Springbok captain John Smit will be appointed as the CEO of the Durban franchise.

"The board of the Sharks (Pty) Ltd will be convening on Monday and a media release will be issued on Tuesday," Sharks chairman Steven Saad said in a brief statement on Wednesday.

Smit, South Africa's most capped rugby player, was set to take up the top job at the Sharks, where he played most of his career, the Mercury newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Durban morning daily reported that "top sources" had confirmed that "it is fait accompli" that Smit would take over from the current chief executive Brian van Zyl.

Van Zyl is due to retire in February.

Smit, who currently plays for British club Saracens, is the most capped Springbok in history, with 111 caps, and captained the national team a record 83 times.
