A SUPERB second-minute goal by Oupa "Ace" Manyisa was good enough to catapult defending champions Orlando Pirates to the top of the Absa Premiership log with a 1-0 win over SuperSport United here last night.

Manyisa's goal saw Pirates depose perennial rivals Kaizer Chiefs from the top of the log.

Manyisa found the net after a solo effort from just outside the centre in the second minute.

Daine Klate squandered a golden opportunity to increase the tally after ballooning the ball over the bar with only goalie Ronwen Williams to beat in the ninth minute.

The visitors started settling down midway through the first half, gradually neutralising Pirates who were using their wings to launch their attacks.

United started the second half with coach Gavin Hunt introducing Clifford Mulenga for Ashley Hartford, hoping to dismantle Pirates defence led by Siyabonga Sangweni. But the plan did not work.

Collins Mbesuma wasted a great chance to double the score as he headed over the bar after a well-taken cross by Klate in the 47th minute.

Pirates were awarded a penalty by referee Thabo Nkosi in the 71st minute after Bevan Fransman was judged to have brought down Klate inside the penalty box, but Andile Jali was denied by United keeper.

l At the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Kgomotso Sethusha reports that Platinum Stars continued with their fine form as they thumped Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 last night.

Goals from either half maintained Stars push for the top spot, as they remained third on the Premiership standings on 34 points.

Henrico Botes maintained his rich vein of form as he put Dikwena ahead in the first half.

Robert Nga'mbi added the second in the 78th minute.

l University of Pretoria's poor form at home continued with a 2-0 defeat to Lamontville Golden Arrows at Tuks Stadium in another match last night, writes Marc Strydom.

AmaTuks have won just once at home this season. Arrows capitalised on the hosts' failure to clear a pass into the area, allowing Nhlanhla Zothwane to score from a narrow angle in the 44th minute. The visitors profited late in the second half again as Bongi Ntuli scored a second goal in the 87th minute.

lMark Gleeson reports from the Cape Town Stadium that Siyabonga Nomvethe announced his return after a lengthy layoff with a toe injury to score a vital equaliser and give Moroka Swallows an away point at Ajax Cape Town.

Ajax had scored four minutes before half-time when fullback Mosa Lebusa tapped in home from a Khama Billiat cross.
